Contemplations of time fuel this series of work, Quiescence. ‘Quiescence’ is a word used to define a chrysalis; a quiescent pupa. A being undergoing a quiet transition, on the verge of emerging into something new, a stillness leading to a deeper sense of self.
Research into the cultural reverence and symbolism of flora and fauna inspire the creative process. Symbiotic relationships of living things and their ever-changing environments are explored through commentary on their conservation status.
Nature is a constant teacher. Explorations in the wilderness uncover inspirations for this series. Twisted and weathered driftwood, remnants of decomposed bones, abandoned nests, empty shells, and crystallized minerals are utilized within assemblage-based compositions and serve as visual representations of the teachings of time.
Ephemeral moments are captured through the hanging chrysalis awaiting its new life, the momentarily perched beetle, and the incessant cricket chirping in the night. These moments are reminiscent of quiescence, and serve as a reminder to be present in each moment.
Some creations are influenced by nature’s repetitive patterns, such as abstract ceramic renderings of honeycombs and wasp nests. The process of recreating these repetitive forms allows the brain to enter a meditative state.
Ecopsychology, the psychological benefit gained by the healing powers of being in nature, is the intended lesson. An overall sense of calm and quietude embodies each work and is inviting the viewer to experience oneness with nature.

Amanda's new series of work "Quiescence" was at The Art Studio, Inc. (TASI) in Beaumont, Texas on February 1, 2020.
"A Common Occurrence of Time" is a Two Woman Exhibition from artists Amanda Barry and Kailee Viator. The two artists have been friends for 12 years since they met in Drawing 1 their freshman year at college. Since that time their art has had unusual connections and themes despite the two friends living in different cities and not showing each other their in progress works. This has happened periodically over the years so the two knew that doing an art show together their work would naturally link. The two have been working for about 2.5 years on the work you'll see below. The two have their own subtitles for their parts of the show. Amanda's title is "Quiescence" and Kailee's title is "Yellowing".
