Artist Statement

My work explores transformation through clay, glaze, and the unpredictable nature of the firing process. Working primarily in ceramic sculpture and wall forms, I create imagined landscapes inhabited by animal presences and echoes of humanity. These environments are inspired by the natural world but are not intended to depict specific places. Instead, they exist somewhere between memory and imagination, where earth, sky, and the cosmos quietly converge.

Glaze is both my material and my image-making process. Rather than treating it as a surface decoration, I use layered glazes to build atmosphere, depth, and movement. Heat, gravity, and chemistry become active participants in each piece, allowing imagery to emerge through flowing surfaces, subtle interactions, and the inherent unpredictability of the kiln. Years of experimentation have shaped a practice that balances intention with chance, embracing the moments when the material reveals possibilities beyond what I could have planned.

Animals appear throughout my work as symbolic presences, while traces of the human spirit emerge through gesture, form, and atmosphere. Together, they suggest quiet narratives that remain open to interpretation rather than fixed meaning. I am interested in creating spaces that encourage viewers to slow down, look closely, and inhabit the space between movement and stillness, the familiar and the unknown.

Ultimately, my work is an exploration of how material transformation can become a way of understanding our relationship to the natural world. Through clay and glaze, I seek to create environments that invite contemplation, curiosity, and a sense of wonder.
